#8 - David, Portland Street, Ormewood Park

David’s 1941 brick home is striking, even before you walk inside.  The former owner began renovations to the home (which originally extended from the front door to just beyond where the stairs to the 2nd floor are now), adding the metal roof, and extending the back of the house for a new kitchen and deck upstairs, and a three-car garage with metal siding downstairs.  In addition, the ceiling was taken up and exposed the rooflines of the home’s entry way.

Having attended college in Atlanta, David was familiar with the area, and bought his home because it was so unusual and had such potential.  A lot of work had already been done, but a lot of work still was needed.  David has added the Brazilian Cherry floorboards and the Birdseye Maple runners in the kitchen, while raising the kitchen up a few inches to meet the level of the huge back, wrap-around deck.  The kitchen itself is about 400 square feet and features cherry cabinets and granite countertops.

The master suite is upstairs, and the bath room was stripped to the wall studs and designed by David’s mother. David did all the tile work in the master bath himself. Be sure to check out the walk-in, open master closet, cleverly tucked away in the master bed room.

Most of the furniture has been in David’s family for years and years.  The bureau in the front bedroom was David’s great-grandmother’s, who won it in a poker game in Colquitt, Georgia. The cool sectional sofa is one of David’s recent furniture purchases.  He found it at the former East Atlanta Antique Store, where it had actually been recovered in pink.  There are also some cool retro chairs that came with the house that David had recovered to match.

Future plans call for finishing the basement into a recording studio.  The immense back deck is primed and ready for an Endless Pool, which creates a current to swim against.
